The National Institute of Standards and Technology plans to put an initial $20 million into a new center aimed at moving quantum hardware from laboratory demonstrations toward repeatable manufacturing. Under an agreement announced June 29, nonprofit research organization SRI International is establishing the Quantum Manufacturing Engineering Center, or QMEC.
The center's stated job is to tackle engineering and production barriers that make quantum components difficult to build at useful scale and consistent performance. NIST highlighted enabling technologies such as cryostats, which maintain extremely low temperatures, and lasers used to control or measure quantum systems.
The announcement is not a promise to construct a commercial quantum computer or a factory that will immediately mass-produce finished devices. NIST described the initial funding as an investment in the center's activities, with SRI expected to organize research and engineering work. The release did not provide a final total budget, a project list or delivery dates for individual technologies.
QMEC extends an existing NIST-SRI relationship. The organizations began working together in 2019 to establish the Quantum Economic Development Consortium after the National Quantum Initiative Act. NIST says that consortium now includes essentially all major U.S. commercial quantum developers along with a growing group of potential users.
The agreement also connects to a June 22 executive order on quantum innovation and to NIST's broader technology strategy. Both emphasize commercial readiness for quantum sensing and the removal of manufacturing constraints.
Success will be measured by practical outcomes: components that can be made reliably, integrated into larger systems and supplied beyond one-off experiments. The official release establishes the partnership and planned initial funding, but it does not yet show that those goals have been achieved.
